2017 - 2018 Concert Series
|January 15, 2017: April Verch Band|
We welcome the return of the April Verch Band! April Verch integrates fiddle playing, step dancing and singing into a unique, electrifying performance. While her music largely draws on the simple country songs and roots music from her native Ottawa Valley, she goes beyond this with rare French Canadian fiddle tunes, bluegrass classics and songs from the old-timey Appalachian tradition. April began fiddling and dancing as a young child, and released two recordings of her own before finishing high school. Soon after, she won both the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle and Open Fiddle Championships. Verchuosity, her first Rounder Records release in 2000, earned rave reviews and a JUNO ("Canadian Grammy") award nomination. Rolling Stone magazine dubbed her the Best Spirit of Doc Watson, and the Toronto Star called her playing "playful and flirtatious, whimsical and wry -- a transcendent level of musicianship where hard-earned technique can safely be abandoned." April is joined by Cody Walters on upright electric bass and clawhammer banjo, and Alex Ruben on guitar and mandolin. Come prepared to stomp your feet as the April Verch Band presents an evening of sparkling music and dance.
