Claudia Schmidt
Michigan native Claudia Schmidt, says she hates categories and describes herself
as a "creative noisemaker." While this irritates some critics, it delights audiences who learn to expect anything at Claudia's concerts: hymns, folk classics, poetry, bawdy verse, torch songs, satire, and multifaceted originals fed by a gamut of emotions. She has an exceptionally wide vocal range, supported by her fine 12-string guitar and dulcimer playing. Over the past three decades she has traversed North America as well as Europe in venues ranging from intimate clubs to 4,000 seat theatres and festival stages in front of 25,000 listeners. She has regularly appeared on NPR's "A Prairie Home Companion" since its early days. Claudia has recorded fourteen albums of mostly original songs, exploring folk, blues, and jazz. Recently she collaborated with the New Reformation Jazz Band on a Dixieland gospel recording and a tribute to Gershwin and Ellington in celebration of their hundreth birthdays. But as stated ny one critic, "Claudia's energy is best captured live." She weaves the elements of music and stage into a program full of life. You never know what's going to happen next.
