October 9, 2016: Calan

Calan BandWe open our 45th season with the award-winning group Calan, five young musicians who bring a fresh and vibrant sound to traditional Welsh music on accordion, fiddle, guitar, Welsh pipes, Welsh harp and the percussive sound of Welsh clogs. They breathe new life into the old traditions, blasting their way through "high voltage" arrangements of reels, jigs and hornpipes before melting into beautiful and haunting old songs or breaking into spirited step dancing. Amongst the traditional melodies and contemporary originals, they breathe fire into the folk tale of Merlin and The Two Dragons, a song that explains why there is a dragon on the Welsh flag. Calan is on the rise, with two albums and international tours to rave reviews. They are known for their delightful stage presence and eclectic dress, as well as their interactive web site where you can learn a tune or step of the month -- and find clues to hidden dragons in Wales, should you ever visit!
